Three day exploring on horseback

In former times, the Icelandic horse was an indispensable servant of the rural household. The Icelandic horse assisted man from birth to the grave, bringing midwives and bearing coffins.

In time, the role of the horse changed from mainly being a “workhorse” people’s only means of transport, to being a hobby and companion, although horses still play an important role in gathering the sheep from the mountains in autumn.

The history of the Icelandic horse is deeply entwined in the history of Northern Iceland, and Skagafjörður region has long been known for horsemanship and breeding. In Fljót, the outpost of Skagafjörður to the north owners of Langhús farm focus their ambitions focus on horse breeding, offering horse riding tours and multi-day treks.
