An unusual season

Spring looks a little different here in Tröllaskagi. Where other parts of the world are welcoming green fields, yellow daffodils and frolicking lambs, we’re welcoming dumps of fresh snow and the peak of the backcountry- and heliski season. Not that we’re complaining!

Avian guests incoming!

Soon we’ll start to see the first of many migratory birds make their way to our shores. Here, they’ll nest in the lowlands and sea cliffs along the arctic coastline. Iceland is of course famous for the adorable puffins, but we’re also excited to welcome the charming golden plover (said to mark the end of winter), the curious trills of the snipe, and the fierce beauty of the arctic tern. Not to mention endless other waders, myriad ducks and sea birds!

Iceland really is a paradise for the eager birdwatcher, or for any adventurer who appreciates a little wildlife along the way.

Meet the locals

Perhaps one of the more unique ways to experience the Icelandic nesting bird season is from the sea. This year, we’re running our famous multi-day sea kayaking course in the spring, rather than the autumn. This means you’ll get to learn new skills (or develop old ones) in the same dramatic terrain as before, except beneath a chorus of birdsong and surrounded by adorable chicks!

Regardless of whether you’re a total beginner or seasoned paddles, there’s something for everyone on these trips. Whether your interest is birds, history or just enjoying cruising between steeply-rising mountains, this is a fantastic experience for every adventure traveler!

Relax and enjoy

The course will, as usual, be hosted at the wonderful Sóti Lodge. Set in Flókadalur valley, also home to a wide variety of migratory birds, you can spend the long, bright Icelandic evening relaxing in Barðslaug pool, enjoying quality three-course dinners and perhaps a drink in our open lounge area, or basking on the lawn in the midnight sun. And if that’s all you’re really looking for – that’s fine too! Sóti Lodge is open for summer bookings from June – we’re looking forward to seeing you!
